Keep Your Kids Safe from Bugs and Sun

When you escape into the great outdoors with your kids, the last thing you want is your child to get eaten alive by bugs or severely sunburned. Not only can hiking fun get derailed by annoying, itching bites from an insect or a painful sunburn, but when a mosquito has the ability to transmit the West Nile virus, a tick can give you Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and too much sun exposure can result in a deadly form of skin cancer, you need to take precautions. All of this can be alarming, but bugs and sunburn are no reason to call off a hike—especially since a few simple procedures will help keep you and your kids safe.

Modern science has improved our quality of life with products to help keep us safe from all sorts of hazards, including the dangers of bugs and the sun. When I was a child, there were few regulations in place for car seats. Children could ride in the front seat of a car without a seat belt. Try that today and you will be cited and charged with child endangerment. Today, kids ride in the backseat, in government- regulated child seats, surrounded by airbags, and encased with steel door beams, all to protect them in the event of an accident. Much like the child car safety improvements, several innovations have made products available to reduce the risk of acquiring Lyme disease, West Nile virus, and sunburn.
